Uplifting Local Communities
Founded in 2021 by Amos and Amy Wekesa, the Great Lakes Foundation was driven by a shared vision of uplifting local communities living near Uganda’s wildlife areas.
With a deep connection to Uganda’s natural beauty and its people, Amos and Amy recognized the transformative power of tourism. In order for whole ecosystems to thrive, sustainable tourism must go hand in hand with community development and environmental conservation.
Our foundation is dedicated to connecting tourism with community empowerment, encouraging local communities to recognize the value of wildlife and nature as vital resources for improving their well-being and achieving long-term conservation goals.
Our Impact
In the past three years, the Great Lakes Foundation has successfully established two training cafes in Kibale National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. These initiatives are funded through safari and bed-night revenue from our lodges.
The cafes provide free hospitality training to local youth from surrounding communities for four months. Upon completion, trainees are employed at our accommodation facilities or referred to other establishments, boosting local employment and skills development
